Mad Cow Disease

In California this week there was the first case of mad cow disease that America has seen since 2006. Fortunately the dairy cow was not yet slaughtered for food. Mad cow disease first popped up in the1980’, 1990’s, wiping out English cattle herds. It was also linked to 225 worldwide cases of human fatal brain aliments. Luckily a human case has not been linked to U.S. beef. Now animals on the same farm are being tested. If they are found carrying the disease they are to be put down. Cows are believed to be infected shortly after birth, although symptoms don’t appear for years.
